Tyson Fury Says Anthony Joshua Tragedy Was the Turning Point of His Career
Former two-time heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury has revealed that a tragic incident involving long-time rival Anthony Joshua significantly influenced his decision to return to professional boxing.
The 37-year-old British heavyweight admitted that the deaths of two of Joshua’s close associates in a December car crash served as the emotional catalyst behind his latest comeback.
Fury Set for April 11 Return at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Fury is scheduled to step back into the ring on April 11 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where he will face Russian-born heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov.
The bout marks his first fight in 15 months following consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk at the end of 2024. After announcing what was widely described as his fifth retirement, Fury spent a full calendar year away from the sport before confirming his return on January 4.
“Tomorrow Is Not Promised” – Fury Reflects on Joshua Tragedy
The announcement of Fury’s comeback came shortly after Anthony Joshua was involved in a car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.
Reflecting on the moment, Fury stated:
“Tomorrow might not ever come and I suppose the biggest turning point in this comeback for me was the tragedy that happened with Anthony Joshua.”
He continued:
“You should never put things off until tomorrow, or next year, or next week because tomorrow is not promised to nobody.”
The comments underscore a rare moment of reflection from the former champion, whose career has been marked by dramatic comebacks and headline-making rivalries.
Fury vs Joshua Mega Fight Delayed
Speculation had grown about a long-anticipated showdown between Fury and Joshua in 2026. However, any immediate plans for the all-British heavyweight clash have reportedly been put on hold.
For now, Fury’s priority remains his April 11 return and re-establishing his dominance in the heavyweight division.
“I Came Back to Make Boxing Great Again”
Fury emphasized that his return is not solely personal but also motivated by his desire to restore excitement to the sport.
“The truth of the matter is I came back for one reason only and that’s to make boxing great again,” Fury said.
“Since I’ve retired for the fifth time over a year ago, boxing for me has gone on a downward slope and it’s become quite boring.”
His remarks suggest he believes his presence can reignite global interest in heavyweight boxing.
