Trump Imposes New 10% Tariff As Supreme Court Strikes Down Previous Tariffs

Trump Imposes New 10% Tariff As Supreme Court Strikes Down Previous TariffsUnited States President Donald Trump imposed a new 10 per cent tariff on imports from all countries on Friday, responding within hours after the Supreme Court declared his previous tariffs illegal.

Gkingmusik  reported that the US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s tariffs in a 6-3 decision, ruling that he lacked the authority to use emergency powers to impose tariffs on imports.

Trump signed an executive order revoking the struck-down tariffs and issued a proclamation imposing the new 10 per cent duty on most goods imported into the United States for 150 days. The White House exempted certain items, including critical minerals, metals and energy products.

Trump Slams Supreme Court Decision

“I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Trump accused the court majority of bowing to foreign pressure without offering evidence.

“They’re very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution. It’s my opinion that the court has been swayed by foreign interests,” he said.

The president invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, becoming the first American president to do so.

The law allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 15 per cent for up to 150 days to address international payment problems.

Gkingmusik  gathered that legal experts say this new approach could also face court challenges. Such tariffs can only be extended beyond 150 days with Congressional backing.

Meanwhile, in response, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News the court ruling produced mixed results but said the administration would return to similar tariff levels through different methods.

“The Supreme Court has taken away the President’s leverage, but in a way, they have made the leverage that he has more draconian because they agreed he does have the right to a full embargo,” Bessent said.

The ruling left unclear what happens to the $133 billion Trump collected from American importers under the law, as the court called it, his “incorrect interpretation.”
