Troy Deeney has reignited his criticism of Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, describing the defender as “insecure” after the pair clashed over comments made about Nigeria’s bonus dispute.
The former Watford striker had earlier questioned Troost-Ekong’s leadership following the players’ strike before their 4-1 victory over Gabon. The squad refused to train in a push for the Nigeria Football Federation to settle outstanding bonuses, a move Deeney felt should have been managed more strongly by the captain.
Naija News reports that Troost-Ekong fired back by asking Deeney to return the Nigerian jersey he had gifted him during their days together at Watford. He accused him of showing disrespect by choosing to air his views publicly instead of reaching out directly.
Deeney has now stood firm on his stance and insists he owes no apology.
“What did I say that’s not respectful? I said exactly what he is, he is a good kid,” he told talkSPORT. “He gave me a shirt, yes, I collect shirts.”
He continued to argue that Troost-Ekong lacks the authority expected of a national team captain.
“You know what is happening when someone tells the truth, it hurts,” he said. “So, if I offend you, Will, deal with it. Will, I do know you, if I was remotely disrespectful, I will do it the right way.”
The former Premier League star, who never played for England despite years of top-flight experience, went further by suggesting Troost-Ekong’s response showed deeper personal doubts.
“You are not really that secure yourself. Chill, Nigeria won, don’t talk about us, let us do the media stuff and you do your podcast,” he added.
