Senegalese Legend Backs Nigeria As AFCON 2025 Title Contender

Senegal football legend Aliou Cisse has tipped the Super Eagles of Nigeria among the favourites to lift the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The tournament kicks off in Morocco on December 21, with the Super Eagles aiming to claim a fourth AFCON title. Cisse included Nigeria alongside his own country and several other strong sides as teams to watch in the competition.

“I hope it will be Senegal, because I am from Senegal and my whole heart is with Senegal,” the former Senegal national team coach who is currently in-charge of Libya told WinWin.

“Apart from Senegal, there are plenty of teams capable of winning this AFCON. Morocco is also a strong candidate, as well as Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria.”

Cissé added: “With the AFCON, you can never truly predict who will win. With a World Cup, you can make forecasts. But the AFCON is a whole different story… There will always be surprises.”

The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group C with Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. Their campaign begins with a clash against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in Fez on Tuesday, 23 December.

Senegal, the 2022 runners-up, Morocco, Egypt, and Algeria are all expected to pose significant challenges, making this edition of AFCON one of the most competitive in recent years.
