Panic gripped the residents of Idi community in the Sabon-Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Monday evening, following a reported invasion by armed bandits.
According to Sahara Reporters, the attackers, said to be operating freely, stormed the village – the ancestral home of the state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Idris Muhammad Gobir – and opened fire, causing immediate pandemonium.
The incident was first disclosed by Bakatsine on its X (formerly Twitter) account: “This afternoon, bandits are currently in Idi community, Sabon-Birni LGA, Sokoto State. Hopefully, authorities will do the needful. The village is an ancestral home of Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Dr. Idris Muhammad Gobir.”
This development, specifically targeting the Deputy Governor’s ancestral area, has intensified worries over the deteriorating security situation in the region.
Sabon-Birni LGA, which borders Zamfara State, has remained a notorious hotspot for mass kidnappings, cattle rustling, and banditry, despite numerous assurances from both security agencies and the state government.
As of the time of filing this report, the extent of the damage was unclear, with no confirmed reports on whether residents were abducted or if any casualties were recorded during the invasion.
