Manchester City Face Defensive Worries Ahead Of Carabao Cup Final With Arsenal
Manchester City will head into Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Arsenal with concerns at the back, as injuries and eligibility issues leave their defensive options stretched.
City are expected to be without centre-back Josko Gvardiol, who remains sidelined and is still some way from returning. Marc Guehi is also unavailable, with the defender ineligible to feature in the competition.
There was, however, a small boost on Tuesday night. Rico Lewis made his return to the bench after missing five matches with an ankle problem. Whether he is ready to start such a high-stakes fixture remains uncertain.
Manager Pep Guardiola may take some encouragement from the way events unfolded in midweek, despite the result itself. City’s Champions League exit to Real Madrid would give the Spanish tactician the room to manage minutes ahead of the final.
City’s hopes were all but gone early on as they were already trailing 3-0 from the first leg. A red card compounded their problems, and they went into the break 4-1 down on aggregate.
With the tie slipping away, Guardiola turned to his bench. Ruben Dias and Tijjani Reijnders were withdrawn at half-time, while Erling Haaland and Matheus Nunes followed before the hour mark. Rodri was also taken off later in the second half.
Though those players were forced to endure spells with 10 men, Guardiola ultimately avoided overloading key figures before Sunday’s showdown.
Gkingmusik reports that Real Madrid defeated Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg tie. Hence, Madrid progressed to the quarter-final stage 5-1 on aggregate.
Arsenal, meanwhile, arrive in stronger form after securing passage to the quarter-finals with a win over Bayer Leverkusen, setting up a finely poised clash at Wembley.
