Kwara Orders Schools To Reopen Monday, Excludes Insecure Areas

The Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development has directed the reopening of schools across the state on Monday, January 5, 2026, with the exception of communities currently placed under special security measures.

Gkingmusik reports that the directive was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Press Secretary of the ministry, Peter Amogbonjaye.

According to the statement, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr Lawal Oloriegbe, approved the resumption of academic activities for all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state, excluding areas earlier identified as being under special security surveillance.

“We welcome our children and teachers back to school across the state. Learning activities are to resume immediately in all but areas earlier identified to be under special security surveillance,” Oloriegbe said.

The commissioner explained that the decision to adopt a phased resumption was informed by the need to safeguard pupils and students while ongoing security operations continue in affected areas.

“This structured school resumption is designed to keep our children out of harm’s way amid renewed security operations. Normal school activities will resume in such places very soon,” he added.

Oloriegbe, working alongside the Teaching Service Commission and the State Universal Basic Education Board, also extended New Year goodwill messages to pupils, teachers and parents, wishing them a successful academic session.

Meanwhile, the ministry has unveiled a radio-based learning initiative aimed at expanding access to education beyond the conventional classroom setting.

The programme, which is supported by UNICEF and the Nigeria Learning Passport, is scheduled to commence on Monday, January 5.

According to the statement, the radio lessons will be aired on Midland FM 99.1 by 11 a.m. on Mondays, 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and 2.30 p.m. on Fridays.

The ministry added that plans were underway to partner with additional radio stations to widen coverage and ensure that more learners across the state benefit from the initiative.
