
Attack Reported at St. Mary’s Catholic Church
The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed an early-morning attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Katchuan Iruan, Boki Local Government Area.
According to police authorities, suspected arsonists carried out the attack around 3:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Fire Destroys Church Records and Vehicles
ASP Sunday Eitokpah, spokesperson of the command, said the attackers set parts of the church on fire.
The blaze destroyed all official records kept inside the sacristy. In addition, the suspects burned two vehicles parked within the church premises.
The affected vehicles include a Lexus 350 Jeep belonging to the parish priest and a Toyota Corolla.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Police Launch Investigation
Meanwhile, police authorities have begun a discreet investigation into the incident.
“No suspect has been identified at this time,” the police spokesperson stated.
However, officers have visited the scene and taken photographs for documentation. Subsequently, authorities recorded the case and transferred it to Okunde Police Station for further investigation.
The command assured residents that it would inform the public once investigators identify those responsible.
Community Reaction and Security Concerns
The incident has raised security concerns within the Boki community. Residents have called for improved surveillance and protection of religious institutions.
Furthermore, local authorities continue to assess the extent of property damage caused by the fire.
