
Tragic Accident in Ogbia Local Government Area
Tragedy struck Ibelebiri community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Wednesday afternoon.
A fuel tanker collided with a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke Napep. As a result, five people lost their lives. The victims included the tricycle driver and four schoolchildren.
The crash occurred along the Ibelebiri stretch of the Yenegwe–Okarki–Otuasega road.
Victims Were Returning From School
According to eyewitnesses, the children were returning home from school at the time of the incident.
Reports suggest the tanker may have suffered brake failure. Consequently, it reportedly skidded off the road and rammed into the tricycle.
The children attended a school in Otuasega community. Meanwhile, the driver, described as a relative, regularly transported them.
One eyewitness said the tricycle had parked near the children’s residence. However, before passengers could disembark safely, the tanker struck the vehicle.
Notably, one pupil had already crossed the road moments before the crash occurred.
Tanker Driver Flees Scene
Witnesses said the tanker bore the NNPC logo.
Immediately after the collision, the tanker driver allegedly fled the scene. However, military personnel apprehended the conductor. Authorities later handed him over to the police.
Furthermore, community youths reportedly secured the tanker to prevent unrest.
An officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), who spoke anonymously, commended the community for maintaining calm.
Police Confirm Investigation
Musa Mohammed, spokesperson of the Bayelsa State Police Command, confirmed the incident.
According to him, authorities have launched a full investigation into the crash.
Meanwhile, residents continue to mourn the victims in the predominantly farming and fishing community.
