Arsenal powered into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in six years as the quadruple chasers crushed Wigan 4-0 on Sunday.
Mikel Arteta’s side routed the third-tier strugglers with four goals in the first 27 minutes of the fourth-round tie at the Emirates Stadium. The goals came from Noni Madueke, Gabriel Martinelli, an own goal by Jack Hunt, and a Gabriel Jesus strike.
Arsenal are back in the last 16 of the FA Cup for the first time since they won the prestigious competition in 2020, which remains their only major trophy under Arteta’s management.
With a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League, an upcoming League Cup final against Manchester City, and a spot in the Champions League last 16, Arsenal’s quest for a historic quadruple this season is well underway.
In a historic turn of events, Arsenal’s latest FA Cup clash with Wigan lacked the drama of their previous encounter in 2014, where they won the semi-final in a penalty shoot-out thanks to a goal from then-captain Arteta.
Wigan, however, have fallen on hard times. Struggling in the League One relegation zone, the team is currently managed by interim boss Glenn Whelan following Ryan Lowe’s recent sacking.
Before the match, Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori suffered an injury during the warm-up, forcing Arteta to bring Bukayo Saka back into the lineup despite his plans to rest the England winger.
It didn’t take long for Arsenal to take the lead. In the 11th minute, Arteta’s trust in Eberechi Eze paid off. The midfielder delivered a pinpoint pass to Madueke, who finished confidently to put Arsenal in front.
In the 18th minute, Eze again provided a key assist. This time, he found Gabriel Martinelli, who calmly slotted the ball into the far corner, extending Arsenal’s lead.
By the 23rd minute, Arsenal had a third goal after Wigan defender Jack Hunt inadvertently scored an own goal off a cross from Bukayo Saka.
The final blow came in the 27th minute when Christian Norgaard’s pass sent Gabriel Jesus through on goal, and the Brazilian finished with a delicate chip over Wigan’s keeper, Sam Tickle.
As we look ahead to the rest of the competition, it’s clear that Arsenal, along with teams like Fulham, are determined to make a deep run. Check out the full list of FA Cup fifth-round qualifiers below.
