AFCON 2025 Stats: Senegal Leads With Most Cards Egypt Tops Offsides Clean Sheets Others
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament concluded in Morocco on January 18, with Senegal emerging as champions after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Morocco.
Pape Gueye’s second-half goal sealed the win for the Teranga Lions, but the post-tournament statistics have also revealed some notable individual and team performances.
Senegal, despite their triumph, also claimed the title of the most carded team in the tournament. With 17 yellow cards and one red card, they led the way in disciplinary records.
Meanwhile, Egypt, which finished fourth after losing in the third-place playoff, recorded the highest number of offsides, with 15 in total.
In terms of defensive solidity, both Senegal and Morocco shared the honour of keeping the most clean sheets, with five each.
However, the final between Senegal and Morocco was overshadowed by controversy. In response to concerns of potential conflicts of interest involving the President of CAF’s Disciplinary Committee, Ousmane Kane, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided to remove him from all matters related to the investigation of the final.
Kane’s Senegalese nationality raised concerns about impartiality, prompting the decision to ensure transparency in the ongoing probe.
CAF has opened an official investigation into the disturbances that marred the final, including allegations of misconduct. Reports from match officials and security personnel are being thoroughly reviewed, and several individuals have already faced legal repercussions.
As part of the ongoing process, CAF is expected to appoint a new senior official to oversee the disciplinary proceedings. A final verdict on the matter is anticipated in the coming days.
