English striker, Ollie Watkins, finally ended his barren run in front of goal as Aston Villa secured their first Premier League win of the season, coming from behind to beat Fulham 3-1 at Villa Park.
Ollie Watkins had gone nine matches without scoring, equalling the longest drought of his Villa career. But he struck at a crucial moment, levelling the score after Raul Jimenez had given Fulham a third-minute lead with a close-range header.
Watkins’ equaliser lifted the home side, who had struggled for much of the first half. Just after the restart, captain John McGinn fired Villa ahead before substitute Emiliano Buendia added a third only two minutes later. It was the Argentine’s first goal in a year and a welcome return to the scoresheet after his injury setbacks.
Villa’s quickfire double proved too much for Fulham, who have now won just once in their last 22 league trips to Villa Park. Marco Silva’s side had started brightly, but the momentum shifted dramatically once Jimenez was forced off injured.
Ezri Konsa made a crucial clearance off the line from Sasa Lukic to preserve Villa’s lead as Fulham searched for a way back. But by then, Unai Emery’s men were firmly in control and never looked like letting the points slip.
